Historical Jesus
Historical Jesus || His Ministry Begins
This message is brought to you by Pastor Darryl Morrison
Main Scripture(s):
Luke 3:1-9; Mark 1:1-11; Luke 3:21-22; Matthew 3:13-17
Historian Micheal Grant states, “ That if conventional standards of historical textual criticism are applied to the New Testament, "we can no more reject Jesus' existence than we can reject the existence of a mass of pagan personages whose reality as historical figures is never questioned."[31]
There is no indication that writers in antiquity who opposed Christianity questioned the existence of Jesus.[32][33]
Thrust Statement:
Through baptism, Jesus reveals the power of God to cleanse us once and for all from sin, and the purpose of those He calls.
Points
The Beginning of His Ministry: Baptism
1. Jewish Baptism: Purifying Waters
2. Remission of Sin (Mark 1:4-5)
- John’s baptism was for the remission of sins and to make a way for Christ.
3. Fulfillment of God’s Plan (Matt. 3:14-15)
- Why was Jesus baptized? (Fulfilling God’s Plan)
- Jesus, the sinless son of God would cover the sins of all humanity.
- If our sins are to be covered, someone must take our place.
- Reveals the nature and love of God (Matt. 3:16-17, Mark 1:9-11)
Summary:
Through baptism, we see the fulfillment of God’s purpose and plan as shown through Christ.
